CPL Daniel Lowe from 1220(March) Air
Training Corps goes for a leap of faith at Parachute course. On
Sunday the 11th of July, Daniel arrived at St. George’s barracks,
Biscester garrison where he would be accommodated for the duration of
the course. On the Monday, he travelled to RAF Weston-on-the-Green where
he began 6 hours of ground training which prepared him for the jump,
this covered many aspects in which to perform a successful jump; exiting
the aircraft, dealing with malfunctions, controlling the parachute and
landing correctly and safely. Once the training had been completed, it
was just a matter of waiting amongst the other 72 students to do the
jump.
The jump was taken from 3500ft using a Dornier G92 aircraft. The
aircraft would do a circuit around the Drop Zone and with each circuit
two students would Jump, “I was the first jumper out of my group, but I
wasn’t worried, I was confident” says Daniel.
Daniel had a flawless exit out of the aircraft, making the ride down
a breeze, and also executed a perfect landing, as he gently floated to
land on his feet. Once all the students had completed the jump, the
staff held a celebratory party in honour of the fact that they had
managed to get all the students trained and jumped in one day, it has
been known to take all week if the weather doesn’t play ball.. After the
jump, Daniel had this to say “That has got to be the most amazing thing
I have ever done, the best experience of my life so far!”. “I applied to
do this course as I have a strong interest in joining the RAF in the
future”
